THE STORY OF KAWAR

Pased from generation to generation

kawar family

The Kawar family* is one of the most well established and influential families in Jordan and Israel.

First production

The family began producing arak (rantus) in Jordan about 70 years ago in a small factory established by the family grandfather Iskandar Kawar.

our family story

Iskandar Kawar produced the first Kawar Arak in Jordan 70 years ago. His son Baheeg Kawar opened a grocery store in 1950 in Nazareth. His sons, Anan and Alaa, grew up in an atmosphere of hard work and taking responsibility. They returned from school and instead of doing homework or playing with friends, went to roll up their sleeves and help in the family business. This created a unique work ethic and a sense of family togetherness that still exists today.

Baheeg Kawar always loved Arak enjoying a glass every day in the evening after work. As an Arak connoisseur, he appreciated quality Araks, but quietly dreamt of bringing the Jordanian family tradition of Arak production to Israel. In 2004 the family began an initiative to combine family history with local traditions and modern technology, to explore the possibilities of producing high quality Arak in Nazareth. In 2010 the new state-of-the-art distillery opened in 2010, in the Zipporit Industrial Park, near Nazareth Illit. Anan is chairman and looks after production and export, Alaa, the CEO, deals more with marketing and the local market.

Sadly Baheeg passed away before his time and so never lived to see his dream come true, however his widow, Widad, did and was able to see the excellent job her sons did in creating arguably the finest distillery in Israel and marketing its products throughout Israel and around the world. Today they honor their father by calling their company ‘Sons of Baheeg’ and their grandfather’s image complete with moustache and tarbush appears in the logo of the company on the label of every bottle.
